Gardening tips for spring
As the weather is getting warmer, Spring is the perfect time to get outside and potter around in your garden. Getting on top of gardening tasks, planning for the summer months ahead and taking in some fresh air can do wonders for your well-being, reducing stress and giving you a sense of achievement as you sit back and see your garden transform after the time spent hard at work. Here are our top Wrendale gardening tips for spring...
Make a plan for your garden
With the weather warming up and the days getting longer, it's the ideal time to start thinking about how you can make the most of your outdoor space. It is important to consider what you want to grow in your garden, taking into account the amount of sun and shade your garden receives as well as the type of soil you have so that you can choose plants that will thrive in these environments. You can use our best-selling gardening journal to help make a plan for your garden, keep track of planting and sowing and make daily notes throughout the year.
SOW YOUR SEEDS
Spring is the perfect time to start sowing your seeds. We would recommend starting off with some hardy annuals such as cornflowers, cosmos and marigolds. These are easy to grow and will give you a beautiful display of flowers throughout the summer months. Did you know that our fabulous seed card collection contains a mixture of corn cockle, cornflowers and corn marigolds? Making them the ideal choice for getting your sowing started this spring.
tidy up your flower beds and borders
Your flower beds and borders might need a little bit of a tidy up now that the winter months have passed. Start by clearing out any dead leaves, weeds and debris, you can make this step a little more comfortable by using one of our waterproof and durable garden kneelers. Turn the soil over and add compost to improve the soil quality, this will ensure that your plants have the essential nutrients they need to grow.
prune any shrubs or trees
Spring is a great time to prune any shrubs or trees in your garden. This not only encourages them to grow, but it will keep your plants looking tidy too. Our stylish gardening gloves have a soft brushed lining and thicker patches on the palm and fingers and offer protection from the elements, this makes them great for pruning.
LOOK OUT FOR WILDLIFE
If you're gardening in spring, there are a few things you can do to look out for wildlife while you're working:
-
Check for nests: Before you start digging or pruning, check for nests in your yard. Many birds, such as robins build nests in trees or shrubs. Be sure to avoid disturbing any nests you find.
-
Be mindful of insects: Spring is a time when many insects become more active. Be aware of bees, wasps, and other stinging insects while you're working in the garden. Try to avoid disturbing their nests or hives.
-
Provide habitat: You can also help wildlife in your garden by providing habitat. Plant flowers and shrubs that provide food and shelter for birds and other animals. Consider installing a birdhouse or a small pond to attract wildlife.
